Dear cordandme, Dear Wen, American's think Taiwanese are scary because all Taiwanese moms use the "big knife" to cut. There is no knife culture in America, that is why they think it is scary. There is no gun culture in Taiwan, that is why Taiwanese think it is scary. It is just a tool, like everything else. If I have a choice: A) Carrying a gun and never using it B) Needing a gun and not having it I will choose A every time. Watch the news and look at your local police, it is not their job to protect you, it is just their job to write the report after you are dead. You only get 1 chance to protect yourself. Why I carry a knife with me in Taiwan, and I have my wife carry a knife and a whistle. Personal safety is your own responsibility.

I think I've read a report somewhere about ppl carry guns for protection, it concludes that ppl are more likely to injur themselves or others close to them(eg. children) rather than the intruders. This might due to the fact that when you try to use a gun - which you rarely use, you're likely to miss the shot and let the thugs have a chance to grab your weapon... I guess that's why America has the most relaxed gun law in the developed countries and yet not a safe place to live in...

Dear iliac, You can read the following link. http://www.american-partisan.com/cols/blanks/081400.htm England and Australia recently banned almost all guns, and crime increased greatly. Virginia has the most relaxed gun laws in America, but has the lowest crime compared to Washington D.C. where guns are banned, but has the highest crime. When you look at real statistics, more guns = less crime. Here in Taiwan, because only the bad guys have guns, the good guys has to run away. Taiwan is "safer" because everybody lives in jails. Look at all the windows, no bars on the windows in America, but all of them in Taiwan. When it comes down to it, you have to decide, do I want to give up freedom for security? "Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety." http://www.press.uchicago.edu/Misc/Chicago/493636.html John Lott wrote the book "More Guns, Less Crime." http://www.newsmax.com/articles/?a=2000/6/26/12629 [Gun ban in Australia] Quote: "Twelve months after the law was implemented in 1997, there has been a 44 percent increase in armed robberies, an 8.6 percent increase in aggravated assaults, and a 3.2 percent increase in homicides. That same year in the state of Victoria, there was a 300 percent increase in homicides committed with firearms. The following year, robberies increased almost 60 percent in South Australia. By 1999, assaults had increased in New South Wales by almost 20 percent." I highly urge you to do some research before you draw any conclusions.
